Individual lash extensions are applied to each individual, natural eyelash – not the skin – using a safe, non-toxic, semi-permanent adhesive. Depending on the client, between 80 and 140 eyelashes are applied to achieve the desired effect, hence the entire application process takes between one and two hours to complete. The eyelash fibers can be synthetic, mink, faux mink, or even silk, with a variety of textures, tints, lengths, and lush levels. Mink and silk lashes tend to deliver more of a natural, day-to-day look, while synthetic fibers drive up the drama for a bolder, more extreme lash look.

What Should I Expect During My Eyelash Extension Application?

When you arrive for your eyelash extension application, be prepared for a complete evaluation of your eye aesthetics and a discussion of your lash goals. Your eyelash extension tech will go to great lengths to help you achieve the lash look you’ve been dreaming of, so be patient and open to suggestions. You’ll finally decide on length, lush level, curl, texture, tint, intensity, and fiber type. Are you going for a full-on glam effect or a subtle enhancement to help boost your natural lash line? This will also be the time your eyelash extension tech will go over the risks commonly associated with eyelash extensions. Then, the fun begins with the following:

• Your entire eye area will be cleansed to prep and prime your natural lashes for the extension application.
• Tape and eye gels will be applied to keep lower lashes separated from upper lashes as your lash tech gets to work. Be prepared to keep your eyes closed for the entire duration of the application process.
• Using tweezers, lash artists will dip the end of each eyelash extension in the lash glue and carefully apply to each individual eyelash. Sometimes, multiple extensions are applied to a single lash for a more voluminous effect.
• Once all eyelash extensions have been applied, drying time is approximately 10 minutes.
• Tape and eye gels are removed.
• Eyelashes are combed using a spoolie brush.

What to Know Before You Go

Here are some helpful hints to ensure your eyelash extension application is a successful one:

• Arrive makeup free and be sure any skincare around the eye area is removed for effective eyelash adhesion.
• Steer clear of caffeinated beverages at least 3-4 hours before your appointment to help prevent shaking or moving during the application process.
• Dress comfortably and bring headphones to help you relax, as you will need to keep still with your eyes closed for up to two hours.
• Stop retinol use a few days before to decrease sensitivity.

Tips to Keeping Your Eyelash Extensions Looking Luscious LONGER

Your eyelash extensions will not last forever, but there are foolproof steps you can take to help keep your new fringe looking fabulous, including:

• Don’t allow eyelashes to get wet for at least 48 hours following application.
• Avoid oil-based cleansers, creams, balms, or butters, as oil will break down the eyelash glue.
• Step away from the shower-head after a few minutes, as excess moisture can cause lash breakage.
• Invest in a satin/silk pillowcase to prevent lashes from breaking or falling out.
• Carefully brush lashes with a spoolie every morning, especially after your shower or face-washing routine.
• Avoid rubbing eyes to prevent premature fringe fallout.
• NEVER use a mechanical eyelash curler! Instead, use a heated eyelash curler to gently boost curve/curl when needed.

How Often Do I Need to Touch-up My Eyelash Extensions?

Figure on “filling” your newfound fringe every 2-4 weeks. Once natural lashes shed, they take the lash extensions with them. Since your lashes are all on different growth cycles, you’ll notice there are some lashes that have shed, while others are still in-tact. You will need to “fill” those lashes that have fallen out to prevent sparse/spotty-looking fringe.
